About Caroline
How I came to be a counsellor
Hiya, I'm Caroline.
I first experienced poor mental health in my early adulthood. My university days were overclouded by depression and anxiety, and several months after I first spoke to a GP, I was eventually offered counselling. I was terrified, overwhelmed and didn't feel I could open up in those early days. It was years before I felt able to try to access counselling again.
Since then, I've benefited in incremental steps from many different types of counselling, but what made the crucial difference for me was starting to volunteer at a survivor-led helpline. The training there was based on the key values and concepts of Person-Centred counselling, and it introduced me to an approach to people and emotions that suddenly made sense and unlocked something for me.
Volunteering in several more mental health support projects followed whilst I was working in a large customer service contact centre. Eventually, this led me to seek a role where empathy was prioritised, and I went to work for a major disability charity's helpline, offering support to callers on a daily basis. It was there that I made the decision to study counselling. I headed back to the classroom for the first time in 20 years and gained a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
Person-centred counselling feels like a natural extension of myself. It's all about listening, empathy, and trusting people to be experts in who they are and what they want.
I won't judge you, I won't give you advice, but I'll be there to listen, understand and feel with you through the difficulties and challenges. I trust that you will find your own answers and grow into the whole, unique, incredible person you knew you were all along.
As you can see from the photo, I'm at my happiest outside. The rocks, trees and green hillsides restore me to myself. They get my heart beating and remind me to breathe.
Let's explore how you're feeling and see where we get to together.
